Add new layers: how to define network zones
Use case
Adding new layers to your network in Qatium enriches your model, unlocking deeper insights and more accurate operational decisions. In this exercise, you’ll learn how to add a zones layer to your network in Qatium.
Defining zones helps you organize your network data, analyze demand patterns, and prepare for operational tasks like rezoning or pressure management. With zones in place, you can make more informed decisions and run targeted analyses on specific areas of your network.
What do you need?
Before starting, you’ll need a zones layer file.
To work in Qatium, your file should include the following:
- ID column with the zone(s) ID(s).
- Inlets and outlets column (can contain multiple inlets/outlets as a comma-separated list).
- Base demand, demand patterns, and total demand for each zone.

Upload your zones layer
For this exercise, you don’t need to prepare anything—we’ll provide a ready-made file example with everything required so you can follow along.
-
Download the example zone layers file
The file will open in a new browser tab—right-click anywhere on the page and select “Save as” to download it to your computer.
- Log in to Qatium and access the demo network in your personal workspace.

- Add the zones layer by:
- Dragging and dropping the file directly onto the interface

- Or opening the Network layers panel
, selecting Add data +, and uploading your file.

Done! Your network now has zones defined.
